Biodiversity and the ecosystem services provided by nature are the foundation of human wellbeing. Natural processes guarantee that we have food, raw materials, clean water and air, and other prerequisites of life. The Finnish Environment Institute (Syke) monitors and anticipates changes in the state of the environment and ecosystem services.
Syke conducts high-quality, innovative and solution-oriented research on nature. We produce information for the implementation of the EU’s Birds and Habitats Directives and their monitoring as well as information to be used as a foundation for reports on ecosystem services and climate change in society.
Our key expert tasks are related to the obligations of international agreements such as the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the CITES agreement. We develop methods for the restoration, remediation and management of natural habitats and species based on the most recent knowledge. We work in cooperation with the administration, research institutes and universities.
Our international cutting-edge research focuses on carbon and nutrient cycles and the impacts of climate change and land use on biodiversity and ecosystem services. We also research the mechanisms of social systems and human behavior to protect nature and ecosystem services. We conduct research in cooperation with several international research networks.
